TMJ Pain

Many people suffer from pain in the area where their jaw connects to their skull, this joint is known as the temporomandibular joint and many people are prone to suffering pain in this area due to various different ailments. The term TMJ pain is often used to describe discomfort in the region. Mild TMJ pain usually be treated by painkillers which work quickly and effectively, however if the pain is persistent or particularly acute then it may be wise to seek medical advice to diagnose the source of the TMJ pain.

 

In the majority of cases TMJ pain is due to a relatively minor problem, although in some instances it can be a sign of a more serious problem. If you are suffering from especially acute TMJ pain then it is best to consult the advice of a dentist rather than ignore or it seek a short term solution in painkillers. Most of the time TMJ pain is caused excess chewing from habits such as nail biting, although sometimes it stems from malformed bones or joint problems.

 

People who have prominent over bites are sometimes prone to suffering from TMJ pain. Another and often overlooked cause of TMJ pain is teeth growing in at awkward angles, particularly wisdom teeth. Many people who are experiencing this type of pain as a result of invasive teeth growing in awkwardly will have to have the offending teeth removed. In mot cases removal of these teeth will relieve the TMJ pain.
